Honesty Trumps Politeness

The kids and I just got in from a walk outside.  There's a track conference on campus, so the place is teeming with new people.  As we were leaving the Student Center, and man in his forties or fifties held the door for us.  I thanked him and walked through with the stroller, followed by Henry.  Thomas was a few paces behind.  I heard him thank the man--unprompted-- as he walked through the open door.  I beamed a little and patted myself on the back.  My kids know their manners, I thought to myself.

Two feet outside the door, Thomas looked up at me and said (at two-year-old volume),

"Hey, Mommy, that man had a big belly just like you had when Cora was in you!"

Well that burst my little proud bubble.
