President's Day

School was closed for President's Day today.  I'll admit, I've never given this holiday much thought.  But Henry has.  He woke up this morning carrying a craft book that had a few ideas for the holiday.  His own little head was brimming with plans.  After an unsuccessful attempt at a peek box, we set our sights on making a diorama.

This is one of Thomas' favorite books, about George Washington and his many dogs.  Cora loves it too, and often asks to read "about George."  I love that she's on a first-name basis with the first president!

The books talks about the president's many dogs, and tells the story of the time he returned William Howe's dog during the Revolutionary War.  This was the page we chose to model our diorama after:

And this was the result:

They were thrilled!  We set it up on the built-in and pulled a chair up to it.  They stop by to study it every few minutes.

The boys set up "old-time" books beside the diorama to decorate.  Not all necessarily related to presidents, but...  Henry drew a portrait of Abe to round out the decorations:

Finally, we made powdered wigs out of batting.  They laughed out loud when they looked in the mirror!  Henry had dressed up "like a president" this morning, so the wig really completed the look.

Turns out President's Day is one we do big, after all...
