Anonymous Donor

At the end of last week, inspired by a story Micah told the kids about an "anonymous donor" who had sent in money for a fundraiser for his class, Thomas decided he wanted to use his own allowance to buy popcorn for each of his classmates and teachers for a parent-teacher association fundraiser this month. He packed all of his dollar bills and coins into a plastic bag, and waited for his teacher to arrive at school early one morning. He slipped into the classroom, handed her the bag, probably winked (he is Thomas, after all), and told her popcorn was on him ("and get a little something for yourself")--but being the benevolent benefactor, he wished to remain anonymous. At least that's more or less how I imagine it went down, knowing how he probably intended for it to go down.

Tonight he told us that the Big Announcement was made in class that a kind, anonymous donor had given money so that each student could get a bag of popcorn on Friday. There was much cheering and rejoicing.

After the accolades and praises had died down, apparently, Thomas crept up to his teacher. He told her, after further consideration, that the "stress of being anonymous" was too much for him to bear, and that she might as well go ahead and let them know who it was.

He's no Mother Theresa. But his generous act and five minutes of anonymous kindness no doubt put him somewhere in her ranks.
