Blueberries and Smack Talk
Last week we made a bucket list of all the things we still wanted to do this summer. It was actually a pretty short list--it's been a full, fun summer! One of the items was a trip to Sechler's pickle factory for a tour. We finally got to go today and had a blast. On the way, we'd passed a "Pick Your Own Blueberries" place. We toyed with stopping, but had more or less decided not to today... until we saw that they also sold sweet corn. The kids had their own bucket list, and corn fresh from a farm was one of their items. We had to stop.
We got two buckets and headed for the patch. We really were just going to pick berries, until the boys noticed that the bucket Cora and I had been filling was a little fuller than theirs. Suddenly it was a contest. I laughed out loud at the smack talk! There's nothing cuter than trash talk flying back and forth between a 6 and 4 year old. A few of my favorites:
Thomas: Man, I'm going to blow this popsicle stand. You're going down, girls!
Cora: It's kind of a bummer, boys, for you. Mommy and I are the best.
Thomas: This bush is, uh, not great, Mom. We're just picking over here because we want to lose.
Henry: Thomas! Stop using all your energy talking and save some for picking!
Cora: It's a good thing they don't know our secret for winning, Mom. (whispered), It's picking them REALLY fast.
We finally finished and headed to the check-out to weigh in. It was as suspenseful as any game show. The boys' bucket was weighed first: 1.51 lbs. There were high-fives all around as they congratulated each other on their hard work. Then the girls' bucket was weighed: 1.52 lbs!!! We let out a whoop and high fived and did a little dance. Cora wasn't short on gloating, "Oh, yeah, the girls win! We were the best, Mom. Oh yeah!!"
But, really, it couldn't have been more perfect...
